‘Flight Of The Navigator’ Female Reboot In The Works At Disney With Bryce Dallas Howard Directing & Producing

Disney Studios is developing a reimagining of its 1986 sci-fi live action feature Flight of the Navigator with a female lead, a project that Bryce Dallas Howard is attached to direct and produce for Disney+.

The original movie, starring Joey Cramer, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Veronica Cartwright, follows a boy who travels eight years into the future from 1978 and has an adventure with an intelligent, wisecracking alien ship, named Max. Paul Reubens provided the voice of Max in the film which was released in late July 1986 grossing an uninflated $18.6M at the domestic B.O. Randal Kleiser, who had directed Paramount’s big hit Grease, and The Blue Lagoon, directed the original Flight of the Navigator off a screenplay by Michael Burton and Phil Joanou.

John Swartz, Howard’s partner at her production company Nine Muses, and Justin Springer are also producing.

The project reteams Howard with Disney+ as a director, the multi-hyphenate having already helmed two episodes of Star Wars: The Mandalorian (Chapter 4 “The Sanctuary” and Chapter 11 “The Heiress”), and an episode of the upcoming spinoff series, The Book of Boba Fett.

Howard stars next in Universal and Amblin’s Jurassic World finale, Jurassic World: Dominion, which opens on June 10, 2022; that franchise through five movies having already clocked over $5 billion WW. She is a 2012 SAG ensemble winner for Dreamworks’ The Help, released by Disney, and was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Actress Miniseries/Movie category for As You Like It. Howard’s feature credits include The Village, Spider-Man 3, Terminator Salvation, Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, and Paramount’s Oscar-winning Rocketman, and she’s currently shooting Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle.

Howard is repped by WME, Management 360, and attorney PJ Shapiro.

Bryce Dallas Howard Set For New Matthew Vaughn Spy Franchise ‘Argylle’

Matthew Vaughn has set an all-star cast for his next big budget action project, which will start shooting this August in Europe.

Argylle, which Vaughn will direct and produce via his banner Marv, will star Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson.

Pop star Dua Lipa will make her acting debut on the project and will provide original music for the title track and score.

The film, based on the soon to be launched spy novel Argylle from author Ellie Conway, follows “the world’s greatest spy” ‘Argylle’ as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure.

The movie will be the first of at least three films in the franchise and is set in America, London and multiple locations across the world.

Conway’s debut thriller is scheduled to be published in a major launch in 2022 by Transworld Publishers Ltd, a division of Penguin Random House.

Kingsman director-producer Vaughn will direct from a script by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman). Vaughn’s regular collaborators Adam Bohling and David Reid will also produce, as well as Fuchs. Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres, Claudia Vaughn and Adam Fishbach will serve as executive producers.

Matthew Vaughn commented: “When I read this early draft manuscript I felt it was the most incredible and original spy franchise since Ian Fleming’s books of the 50s. This is going to reinvent the spy genre.”

Zygi Kamasa, CEO of Marv added: “We are delighted that we will be starting our fourth, and by far the biggest, feature film production since the start of the global pandemic. It demonstrates both our desire to scale up our production activity and our ambition to continue to launch new franchises beyond the Kingsman series of films.”

Marv is in post on Tetris, starring Taron Egerton, which it is producing for Apple; Silent Night, directed by Camille Griffin and starring Keira Knightley and Lily-Rose Depp,;and action comedy School Fight, directed by stunt director Damien Walters. The King’s Man, the prequel to the Kingsman movies starring Ralph Fiennes, is scheduled to be released theatrically by Disney in December 2021.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Seth Gabel Voice Star in Video Game ‘Maquette’

Developed by Graceful Decay, the game is set in a recursive world where players experience the life cycle of a relationship and solve spacial puzzles as the story unfolds. Howard and Gabel play romantic couple Kenzie and Michael, characters who guide players through the narrative but are not explicitly seen on screen.

“This is about a relationship that ultimately doesn’t work out,” Howard tells The Hollywood Reporter, “but it’s not a tragedy in any way, shape or form.” There is no villain in the game, she says, instead it follows two people who were together for a time in their life and impacted one another’s growth, and then simply moved on. “I think there’s something really nuanced about that that I really appreciated,” explains Howard.

The role of Kenzie was described to the actor by director Hanford Lemoore as a “San Francisco hipster.” But performing the role required some balance, Howard says, because Kenzie was “interested enough” in that scene, so that the story could move forward, but wasn’t so earnest that suddenly she’s no longer a hipster. “It’s an interesting archetype, the hipster, and there’s this inherent sense of irony,” she adds.

As things progressed, the idea was to have the characters’ dialogue feel conversational and modern, as if they were two people in a real world, but with a bit of a heightened element as well.

This is the debut game for Lemoore at Graceful Decay, and he first conceived of the idea while exploring the architecture in his neighborhood in San Francisco ten years ago. “Something set me off about trying to do [a game] in 3D with physics,” Lemoore tells THR, a concept which was “way beyond” his initial thought to do a 2D game featuring a world within a world. “I thought about how physics is so chaotic; with a physics simulation you can knock an object and you know it’s going to tumble, but you don’t know how it’s going to tumble,” says Lemoore, using the example of bowling pins going all over the place. “I thought about the idea of copying that really complex, almost random behavior, onto multiple levels of recursion.” Continue reading Bryce Dallas Howard, Seth Gabel Voice Star in Video Game ‘Maquette’
